Getting Around Molokai

While Molokai is a fairly small island at 35 miles long and 10 miles wide, everything is spread out. Below is the basic layout of the island.

West End

Our condo is on the very West end of the island and there are no restaurants, grocery stores or shopping of any kind, though there are several beautiful beaches within walking distance. These beaches are not recommended for swimming or snorkeling in the winter months due to rip currents and high surf. There is a small store within a 10 min walk of the condo, at the Kepuhi Beach complex that has some basic necessities, snacks and some souvenirs.

Center of the Island

The airport (MKK), is 14 miles east of the condo. There are no restaurants and one small coffee shop that has very limited hours. Alamo is the only car rental agency at MKK and they are very expensive. There is a small community called Hoolehua nearby the airport that has a small grocery store and a restaurant.

South Center of Island

Kaunakakai is the largest town on the island and is 6 miles west of the airport. There are 2 small grocery stores, 2 gas stations, a few small shops, ATM's, a library and eating establishments. This is also where the wharf is located for any fishing, diving or charter activities.

East End

Anything east of town is considered East end. There is one market at mile marker 16 called Good's and Grindz. They have a small food window with very limited hours and a small market with essentials.  There is a nice beach at mile marker 20 for snorkeling and the road ends at Halawa Valley.

All that to say, it would be difficult to be on the island without a vehicle. Below are some transportation options for you to explore and to make your visit more enjoyable.

Rental Cars

*Alamo at MKK - most expensive but convenient & new cars
*TURO - Turo.com - Turo is a car sharing app and there are several people on Molokai who rent vehicles through this platform.

*Molokai Outdoors - molokaioutdoors.com

Taxi's

There is currently one taxi company on the island called Hele Mai Taxi (808-336-0967). They have 3 or 4 vehicles and they all don't operate at the same time. They also do not operate on Sunday's unless you call and make arrangements ahead of time.

Shuttle Bus

There is a free shuttle bus on the island called the MEO. It has 2 loops, one from town to the east end and one from town to the west end. The schedule is very limited and it usually does not run on weekends or holidays. It is primarily for local residents, but if there is room, all are welcome.

Bicycle

I would not recommend this as a primary means of transportation, but I'll put it here as an option. http://www.mauimolokaibicycle.com/index.html
